Will-it-Fly?® DKTS -- When Doing it Right Matters™
The sole purpose of the Will-it-Fly?® DKTS (Dynamic Knowledge Transfer System) technology is to make it easier to understand and implement specific processes at the time of need -- without the slowdown and frustration that comes with having to sift through extraneous material. While there is no shortage of formats currently in use -- such as manuals, articles, whitepapers and SOPs -- most of them have severe shortcomings as performance support tools, as they are often far too cumbersome to be used at the time of need, even if they are online. By involving a few cognitive scientists and researching how mission critical operations deal with the problem of performance support, as well as how experts themselves prep for important tasks, the EduCel Will-it-Fly?® DKTS was born. The name comes from the key feature that sets it apart from other solutions -- the deliberate use of cognitive prompts (diagnostic questions) to trigger metacognition. The Methodology
When experts perform their own prep, they typically follow the procedure of: 1) setting a standard, 2) engaging in metacognition (higher level thinking about existing knowledge, lack of knowledge and needed knowledge), and 3) selective learning to fill any knowledge gaps. The Will-it-Fly?® DKTS emulates and automates this process.
![]() Since the Will-it-Fly?® DKTS methodology and technology are based on techniques from the cognitive sciences -- not on specific subject matters -- any type of knowledge about any type of process can be embedded in the system, so long as a clear standard can be defined beforehand (e.g., Best Practices). User Experience From the user perspective, the execution of a module always starts with a set of diagnostic questions -- useful regardless of experience and knowledge level. In reality, the questions in a Will-it-Fly?® DKTS module are carefully written to trigger relevant metacognition and frame the appropriate thinking for the task at hand. In the cognitive sciences this technique is called cognitive prompting. When the user has achieved a solid understanding of the basic standard for a particular task, it is important to make sure the system can seamlessly answer any questions that may have surfaced during the framing process. This is why all Will-it-Fly?® DKTS modules have a set of in-depth educational briefs on the back end (e.g., with illustrations and further links to regulatory documents if appropriate), which may, or may not be served up or accessed by the user depending on need.
If note taking is important, tablets allow for a split screen solution with the Will-it-Fly?® DKTS module running in a browser window of the user's choice. Off the Grid Systems are run on EduCel servers, managed by EduCel System Administrators in data centers with 24/7/365 power, cooling, connectivity and security to ensure mission-critical operations and business continuity.
